So I bought a class 5.......

facepalm facepalm facepalm facepalm

I'm not as happy as I would like to be with this amp and one of my reps said that I could maybe put an el34 in it instead of a el84. Does this make sence at all ......Al

Your rep is obviously an idiot.

For starters an EL84 is a noval based 9 pin pentode tube like a 12AX7 whereas an EL34 is an octal based power tube.

So what could I potentially do to clean it up?

Assuming you don't mean the dust on it, clean it up in what way?
Is it not stock, what needs cleaning, is it hummy, hissy?

Please expand.

Yeah, 'splain! And does that thing not have a standby switch? I have noticed that on a few different low-wattage amps. What's the deal?

No standby switch. Its very "blatty" it breaks up at around 4 and I would like it to hardly break up at at all if at all possible. Right now its stock.

My guess as to the no SB is that the B+ is likely regarded as low enough to not endanger the tube everytime they are powered up cold, also small chance of a delayed HT supply circuit.
As far as cleaning up your amp, that would require a schematic and some modding yes.

I was on the L&M website and they were talking about the Class 5.
"If you want a clean sound, keep it low. If you want it to distort, turn that puppy up."
and
"Crank the volume up past about four, though, and youll be rewarded with a punchy, hairy, snappy overdriven sound not dissimilar to Malcolm Youngs clean-but-tough rhythm tone."

Dylan,
When I read that you want your amp to hardly break-up all, my thought was "with a 5watt amp?"
Do you have the head or the combo?

My thoughts exactly, why do you think the Fender Twin is 100 watts?

Guitarists need to choose their amps with their end use in mind. Just like a client of mine that takes a THD hotplate with him everywhere he goes so he can break up his aforementioned twin early without clearing the room with SPL.
Maybe you guys should trade!

All this. I'd like to expand to say, all musicians need to choose their gear with their end use in mind. So many drummers fall into the category of, "My cymbals are soooo loud for this gig I'm on..."
"Once again, it is NEVER the gear that makes a good record.
It just fills Forum pages..." --compasspnt
