That's how you broke your bit, not because it was cheap.
Cheap bits are actually softer and although they don't cut as well they are less brittle.
Alloys as with most materials tend to generally trade of hardness (carbon content) for malleability.

I'm sorry, drill bit. I mishandled you and then insulted you. I've been there before, and it's no fun; that was very uncool of me.
