Wireless mic issues

Postby josh porter » Thu Aug 13, 2009 2:55 pm

*sigh* I was on a call today for a lady who had several wireless mics. the first two work great but the third wont pick up on the base unit. upon further inspection and moving the wireless unit closer to the base I got a flicker on the diversity B side but not on the A side and not enough to a steady RF lock. Any advice on where to take it to get it looked at? They need it for the middle of Sept and cant send it to the manufactor as it takes them a whole year before they fix it and ship it back. Thanks guys.

First off, make and model if you can please. It makes for a much greater chance of someone being able to help.

Captain Obvious assumes you have a properly matched transceiver combination... It wouldn't be the first time I found mismatched units. No, the "channel" numbers or letters don't count. Always make sure frequencies are the same range.

Does the "third" unit work without the other units transmitting or does it not work at all regardless?

Is there a squelch setting on the receiver? If so, see if you can lower it.

Yes they are both on the same frequency....haha....the third unit works and gets the same diversity mis lock regardless of if the other units are on or not and when on the same channel as the base they work so I know that the base works and based on the position of the third unit it gets a stronger diversity B lock but still no A lock.

So you've concluded that it's the transmitter for sure?

The receiver works properly with a different transmitter?

Yes I'm sure its the transmitter. When I use different transmitters the base works and reponds and sometimes if I were to move the transmitter toward or away or up or down then I get different signal levels. And when I press on the transmitter I get a stronger signal then if it just sits in my hand.

...and you've programmed the questionable transmitter to a different base just to see what happens? With anything wireless, I would be super doubly certain.

If the transmitter is busted up, and you aren't confident enough to look at it's innards yourself, you'll need to find someone who will open it up.

Brand and Model?

Yes I have tried them with other bases and got the same result. I am getting the model and make now and I will get pictures and post them as well

If you're not a moron, it never hurts to open up the transmitter and look for anything obvious. Loose or broken parts, antennae disconnected, full of Coke or coffee.

If you are, please defer to someone who isn't.

I took the transmitter apart and its dry inside. The main board is coated in a waterproofing agent but the problem lies in the transmitting antenae itself and I can't take that apart becuase it is one solid lil black box at the bottom of the wireless pack. here is an image of the unit:
