Signal and Power in one cable.

Postby Malcolm Boyce » Sun Oct 18, 2009 2:00 am

Looking for a solution for a single balanced signal cable combined with a single 15A power circuit. We currently fly UPA1Ps at the theatre with separate XLR for signal and power via twist lock and powercon but I've heard there are combined options inside one jacket.

Any suggestions?

I've never heard of that before. I would imagine you'd need some fairly heavy sheilding. Any specific reason why two cables aren't working?

Geeze Malcolm... running audio and AC that close for any great distances is just looking for trouble, shielding or not. I would explore all other alternatives first, but if for some reason you have to go that route, I'm sure Thom at Munro's would be able to fix you up.

Actually guys, in the powered enclosure world that we're living in, it's become very common. Everyone is running power and audio together anyway, it's just something that's evolving into something more convenient.

Imagine guys running stage monitors with powered boxes having to run two individual cables to each enclosure instead of just one. Having it in one jacket isn't adding much more susceptibility than what we already have with an XLR + Power line run parallel on the floor for 75'. You have to remember, the signal cable is line level, not mic lines.

In our situation, we have several powered Meyer enclosures that already have signal and power run parallel for distances between 25' to up to 100'.

One example of what I'm talking about:

Since I posted this, I've found out that Whirlwind and others are selling the cable bulk as well in a variety of configs.

Those are super cool, and I'm sure priced accordingly being Meyer product. I noticed they aren't for the UPM which seems odd.

That would be overkill for what we want, and the data connection would be currently useless for us. Leave it to Meyer to go several steps past what most actually need.
