A "good" mix shouldn't have to sacrifice hearing the vocal to enjoy the instrumental elements. It should be a choice to "bury" the vocal, not a trade off. IMO, the two elements should be able to co-exist and complement one another. That is, unless it's "instrumental" music with vocal "sounds". "Pop" music is all about the vocal IMHO.

If I could telepathically communicate my song ideas directly to your brain then we wouldn't need engineers at all, I suppose. Until then, bring on the 'verb!
