Firestudio

Postby Nick H. » Fri Dec 25, 2009 2:19 pm

Hi everyone,

Today, I was given a presonus firestudio, but it is only firewire to firewire for the connection, my laptop doesn't have a firewire input, any idea what I should do?

YES! New recording equpiment...

And I suggest skipping university and buying a 2500$ laptop that works with it.

It should get you started, but probably won't give you great performance. I'm assuming if you don't have FireWire, you also don't have an express card slot?

Nope, I was looking into maybe just installing a firewire port into my laptop, and getting rid of a couple usb ports. I work at an electronics store so I can get the parts and labor fairly cheap.

I've never thought of doing that to a laptop. I have no idea how that would affect the internal bus architecture of the computer.

Your computer is practically brand new and wasn't cheap by any stretch. I have a hard time believing that you don't have a firewire 400 port.

EDIT: Oh, and... Hi! I'm back from Thailand.

Yes, I missed it the first time, I have a 4 pin firewire port and bought the appropriate chord to make it work.

Thought so. So basically you have a plug like this:

So you just needed a cable like this:

Problem solved. Good choice on the Firestudio, you'll have a lot of fun with it.

I look forward to it, but feel quite stupid that I missed it!

I glad about your new purchase. Today I just broke down and purchased the Central Station along with the remote. It'll make things so much more efficient around here. As soon as it arrives I'm gonna have a look at some of the problems Andrew was having with the remote, like the cheap volume pot and the noisy TB switch and see if Alain can fix these problems. Al's been on a winning streak lately in terms of repairs and mods.
