Suggestions for a pocket recorder?

Postby Malcolm Boyce » Fri May 14, 2010 12:28 am

I'm looking for suggestions for a pocket recorder for songwriting. I was a cassette recorder guy for years, and then I got away from it as a sketch tool. Now I'm looking for something similar but more in touch with the times. I love the idea of being able to import files directly from these little deals into a project to work on.

This is one that caught my attention as simple and suitable for what I'm hoping for.

Anyone have any experiences with something like this? Pros/cons... stuff to look out for?

It's not quite as small as the Yamaha, but I love the ZOOM H2. http://reviews.cnet.com/voice-recorders ... 92828.html

+1

This thing is great! I got one for my mom to record her notes, and I borrow it from her all the time. You'd be surprised by the sonic quality of this little thing too. It's the only device of it's kind I have any experience with though. Jon Goud was the one to recommend it to me, he uses one to record rehearsals and shows.

I bought mine to record jam sessions to remember what it was I was playing while writing some new tunes. It picks things up quite well. I like that I can also use it as an external mic with my video camera, and that it records to an SD card. It came highly recommended on the internet cello society forums, and most of the people there are really picky about sound quality.

I'll add my approval to the line of Zoom products, too. I've used the H2, H4, and the Q3, and have been impressed with all of them.

Hey Malcolm, I've been using the H2 for a couple of months now recording Bigg Medicine rehearsals, and I just recorded our gig on Friday night at Club Tonic with it - it sounds great! Maybe sometime this week we can hook up and you can have a listen.
