My First Electric Sponge®

Postby Malcolm Boyce » Mon May 02, 2011 2:12 pm

So, something unusual came my way with a bass player using what we ended up calling the "Electric Sponge"®. On an upright bass, he has a condenser element of some sort, mounted inside a sponge, covered in an old drumhead. It is mounted up high on the body, and with his right hand he plays it with a drum brush, while plucking the bass. It is essentially providing that "snare" on the backbeat kinda sound, but that is way oversimplifying what he does with it. The technique is ingenious.

Weird. How does he hold the brush while still plucking? Any pics?

Sorry, no pics. I didn't really get a close look while in action, but I think he's just got the brush in between his thumb and index fingers, and is "plucking" with fingers, and the typical "muting" motion puts the brush in striking position. It looks very natural when you see him do it. Almost obvious, in a weird kinda way.

I think you can actually see it on the front page of their website:

Wrong again... It seems that if you click on the video on their front page, and then lost that vid window, the pic in question comes up on the back page.
