Analog Summing Emulation?

Postby Mathieu Benoit » Fri Dec 16, 2011 11:31 am

Don't get me wrong, I'm the first one to be skeptical about anything, but after hearing testimonials from people that are far more skeptical than I am... I have to wonder if there is anything to this?

Fluid Audio Group is not looking at getting into analog summing any time soon since the cost and logistcs put it far down the list of priorities, but it makes me wonder about certain "workarounds".

Just the title of this thread made me LOL!

But the list of people using VCC wouldn't.

No. But the concept still does.

The analog summing is cool, but the digital-analog summing is really something.

I hear you... I'm curious though since the people that say good things about it usually hate this type of stuff.

yeah i'm curious about VCC too, although I doubt I'll be taking it for a test ride anytime soon. I get around my digititus with copious amounts of Cranesong Phoenix plugins which seem to do the trick.

How do you like the Phoenix stuff? I'm thinking about some software purchases in the New Year, I'm also looking at picking up a few Massey pieces.

I like it a lot, but I haven't tried out any of the new stuff that's come out recently. I'm really interested in tape head, VCC and waves MPX.

Why don't you see about getting demos of those and any others you're interested in and I'll run them through Phoenix for you to compare. There's 5 plugins with three bias settings each so eve though it's subtle it's got a pretty broad range. V2 also has an output trim which was the only real thing I found missing.

Actually just checked, and they do have a demo too, you just have to email them for it. Also you can switch between the 5 process' right in the plugin which is also a nice feature.

So I've read some opinions of the VCC and the, dare I say, "name" guys aren't so much saying it's replacing summing as they are saying, if I can't do analog summing, this helps.

Not entirely a validation of the concept.

I never said it was replacing anything. I was specifically talking about cost-effective workarounds, like I alluded to in the first post. If you ask me, the fact that they are not dismissing it outright is a form of validation to begin with. The cost and logistics involved in analog summing make it rather prohibitive for most. Personally I may not even be at the point yet where my skills are fine tuned enough to notice much difference but this whole summing controversy his piqued my coriosity. Like anything else though, I don't play games... I am completely aware that it may be mostly irrelavent to me given my current experience.
