Zen and the Art of Producing

Postby Mathieu Benoit » Thu Aug 16, 2012 9:31 am

My copy just arrived Tuesday. I'm about a third of the way through and I absolutely love it. It's every bit as good as Zen and the Art of Mixing, but I think I'll learn even more from this one. Andrew, you should buy it (if you haven't already.)

Mine arrived on Monday. I'm saving it for Europe though. I'm currently working my way through Ken Scott's book, which you would absolutely love. I'll loan it to you when I'm finished.

Yeah I almost ordered that one at the same time. But I wanted to wait. For what, I don't know...

Glad I didn't wait. I need to pick up some Bowie stuff to listen along with though.

I'm nearly done and I don't think I'll do bed tracking or mixing for something that I'm producing ever again. Not that I think this latest effort went sideways or anything... It's just that it's easier to separate those roles in the end and I get why now.

So, I'm already halfway through "Abbey Road to Ziggy Stardust" that Andrew lent me on Saturday. It is pretty much as awesome as I thought it would be.

Yeah I think in the new year I'll reread it while listening to all of the albums mentioned in the book.

I've been a fan of Ken Scott's work since I was very young... Too young in fact to understand why and how significant those recordings are. I went back and checked some stuff out that he described in detail about certain tracks and it was, and is, a fun ride for me.

The second half of this book is having a harder time of keeping my interest.

Being a fan of the artists he's talking about probably makes a difference for the reader...

Fair enough... and to be honest, It's not the whole second half of the book (I'm not done yet) but certain sections are less interesting to me.

Overall though, this book may have an unexpected influence on me for a lot of reasons.

Yeah I found the second half not quite as enthralling, although there's some funny stories about his wife.

Interesting... I had no idea he worked with the Dregs. Man, he didn't go easy on Rod at all...

Wow you burned through that fast. Get Nick to read it if he's got time and interested and then just leave it around the studio and I'll grab it sometime.
