Constantly Loosening Snare Head

Hey drummers,

I have a nice Yamaha steel snare that I've had for a few years. It's a great snare. However, within the last 6 months or so, for some reason, one or more of the lugs work themselves loose (to they point where they're easily finger loose). It's always the lugs surrounding "ground zero" for the side of my stick when it hits the rim for hard rim/snare shots, of which I do a lot of. I've always done a lot of that type of playing, so it's not likely to be a change in technique that's causing this all of a sudden.

I've tried cleaning the lugs and coating in vaseline, with no results. Anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this, and what I can do to fix it?

Thanks,
SB

Lug Locks.... Exactly what you're looking for.

I bought a pack at L&M not too long ago. Not sure if they'd have some in stock.

Wonder if we'll see manufacturers start using this kind of thing on higher end drums, although with brass inserts on newer lugs, I find things to be far more stable and need less gadgetry to hold a tuning.

My cheap Sonor Force 3009 LE kit has nylon inserts in the lug casings and the tension rods never ever loosen up.

I haven't had the chance to do anything about it yet. I like the tags you slip over the lugs. Seems cheap and easy. I think I only new one, or 3 at most (surrounding Ground Zero on the rim where the side of my stick hits for rim shots).
I'm just wondering mostly why it just started to manifest recently... I've played the same way for years, used the same snare and the same type of heads. The same stick sizes... Nothing that I can put a finger on has changed, except maybe the drum itself. I'm wondering if it has a bit of a warp in it or something. Maybe someone dropped it on me and didn't say anything. I dunno. I think I'll try out those slip-on tags first, and if that proves to be sucky, I'll shell out for the nylon insert lugs.

I wonder if loktite light would work...

It most certainly does. I stopped using it because I didn't like gunking up my threads. But it's very effective at keeping them from getting loose.

I typically end up with 4 on the near side of snare top. It can depend on the number of lugs the drum has. Sometimes I have a problem with the lugs adjacent the snare beds on the bottom as well, but not so common.

Try the luglocks... They're cheap, and they work.

As far as "why now", I've seen it start after a drum getting cleaned, a hoop getting spun to a "different" position, a head getting changed after being on for a long time. Not entirely unusual in my experience.
