basic home recording equipment

Hello all,

A coworker of mine is retiring, and was given the choice of gift card for only 3 different places. She chose the source and was hoping to get something for recording basic guitar and vocals. She has just been using the built in mic on her PC, so anything is better than that. What can she buy at the Source totalling $250 or less to get half decent home recordings?

Wow... The Source... I really don't know. I wonder what brands they even have available. I suppose some kind of interface for a computer perhaps. Now I'm curious and will have to look... 8-)

My first thought would be a USB microphone, as per this page: http://www.thesource.ca/estore/category ... icrophones Second opinions are more than welcome, though!

When I first demoed Baltic Latvian Universal Electronics microphones at a friend of mine's studio who was at the time their Canadian distributor there was not a model under $1000 and they were hard to come by, fairly exclusive and undeniably boutique.

Thanks for all of the replies :). Does anyone have any experience with the Yeti Pro? Seems to be exactly what she needs.

I don't, but I'd start with amazon reviews. Figure out if the 1- and 2- star reviews are legitimate complaints, or people whining about shipping charges. My rule of thumb is: better spelling and grammar means they're a more trustworthy source :)

Thank you, Matchoo, for bringing the much needed clarity to Alain's vague recommendation. I wasn't even sure that he was posting in the right thread. God bless you, Al.
And now we know the rest of the story.

I was referring to the consumerization of what was once an exclusive brand of handmade micromophones.

P.S. For clarification the budget quote was from another thread obviously. Had she not smartly stated her intended budget that would have been my first line however.
