They know what they want, and he knows what the meters read. He had them dial the rig up to the point where it couldn't get any louder and the artifacts of that would be noticeable to anyone with 6 months experience in front of PAs. To even suggest that it required special abilities to hear it is laughable.

Hopefully this approach is at least partially an attempt to prevent system failure during the event. Too many cases of people not accounting for necessary headroom and causing massive component failures. I'm probably being an optimist.

I hope hearing protection is free at the gates.... :roll:

The number of times they refer to the number of "watts" the systems are is a pretty good indicator of who the target audience is.... :mrgreen:

The production and publishing of this video clip is definitely "'coptering" but what is happening on a contractual level is not.

DeMaio has been at this longer than anyone on this thread, he has interests to protect, namely a long standing expectation from his fans.
The grandstanding and blowharding has become ingrained in his act, while this coupled with their style of power metal may seem pretty buffoonish to those looking in from the outside, it is nevertheless a serious financial enterprise with the large summer festivals in Europe and to a lesser extent South America.

He is merely holding a promoter to the wording of the tech rider portion of the performance contract which he has every right to do. If only all acts felt compelled to deliver a technically impressive performance for the ticket purchasing fans we wouldn't be left with last summer's Kiss performance at Harbour Station. Instead every show would sound as good as Joe Satriani did at the Moncton Casino this fall.

Instead we get local promoters who book national touring acts such as Jimmy Rankin in uptown restauraunts leaving the owner to 'provide' PA equipment which he in turns borrows from a neighbouring pub's "B" stage. Just gross. On the other hand I got the panicked call from the touring tech to provide graphs, reverb mics and cables on a Sunday afternoon. She was gracious enough to accept that she'd be daisy chaining two off brand 6 channel mixers during the gig, but I digress.

Also 138.4 were instantaneous peaks, the average being in the 120's. Is that right or safe, very arguably not. Do the fans ask for it, yes indeed. Are they being injured, likely. Will legal action ever be taken against them or other bands doing the same thing, time will tell.

I'd still rather have a clean 125dB then a compressed, limited or otherwise distorted 115dB any day.

Point is, good on Joey for standing up to his rights, the video however is just amusing propaganda aimed at fans.

I wish more acts would have the appropriate rig for the gig at hand but I see it all too often, in one form or another, that it isn't the case. Too many people willing to throw sound quality under the buss for something they deem more important.

-Production not being advanced properly by the artist/representative.
-Provider of rig not communicating truthfully the spec of what is showing on the date.
-Promoter unwilling to expense appropriate rig.
-No one willing to step up and put the gig on the chopping block unless someone changes things to make it work.

As soon as someone questions the quantity of the house rig at Imperial, I suggest we pull it and have them bring something in. All too often, someone deals that out of the options, and people end up unhappy. Happens at least a few times a year in that venue, and that's just one example that I run into.
