well...
Lloyd's long rant actually took me a few days to read through, cause it's that friggin' long... but hey, I can really appreciate Lloyd's conviction about stuff like this... but his gift in being so pretentious always prevails... good luck to him.

From the "equipment" section of his site:

Of course we have the standard Shure & Sennhieser Dynamics but we also have 2 tube mics (great vocal sounds) a Coles Ribbon Mic (Amazing for capturing room sound and tone) many options in the large diaphram condenser category including (newman, AT Sony and AKG)
Please tell me he doesn't pronounce it "New-man"...

What an interesting read, I didn't think it was possible to cram that much intensity into a document of that size. My personal favourite?

At this point, I could write a very long tirade telling you of all my accomplishments, but that would just come across as bragging and arrogance so I won’t do that...

For Example:

These are the brutally honest opinions of a professional musician with 27 years experience and a recording/mixing and mastering engineer, NB’s most accomplished record producer and owner/operator of Reel North Recording Studio since 1988, who has successfully completed over 140 productions, mastered over twice that may and did well enough to enter semi-retirement at age 39!

I am one of the most versatile and accomplished bass players in Atlantic Canada playing most styles of music on fretted and fretless basses for over 27 years.

I’ve single handedly raised production standards in this province, have nothing but completely satisfied clients, have gotten every single grant I’ve ever applied for as a producer, artist and studio owner and was debt-free and semi-retired by age 39 – any questions?

It is my opinion that most “recording schools” are ‘way too much like “school” and not at all like real life...

...But his teaching Digital Audio at UNB is a "real life" course.

OK, I've wasted enough time reading this stuff tonight.

Thanks for that link Goz. Lots of fun.

Reel North can offer up to four independent headphone mixes simultaneously.

Think about it folks!!! Imagine the possibilities.

Some funny shit, to be sure.

The whole idea of his blurb is to create an aura of exclusivity.
"Are you special enough to work with me?"
Write a big enough cheque and you are.
I think Costco is a good parallel. Just another "box" store, but with a membership card to make you feel special.

I dunno if it still applies, but I could have been semi-retired at 39 if I lived in my moms' basement too.

Another thing I don't think he realizes is, just because you have talked to a few folks who went to a "recording school" in Frederiction and think they didn't get anything from it, that doesn't equate to all recording schools are a ripoff.

He doesn't even think about who is teaching at a place like this:

http://www.harrisinstitute.com/

Or what some of the former students of some of the more reputable schools have done, and are doing in the industry.

I could go on, but you really don't want me to.

Just another note..where are students or potential students going to get 14,250 dollars if it's not even an accredited school or learning environment? Student loans won't touch it. I'd love to go back/finish the training I've started, but I'd never do it without some sort of Provincial/Federal accreditation, for that price anyways. I understand that people can get these skills through years of experience, but accreditation counts for something, doen't it? Will there be a Lloyd's stamp of approval recognized world wide, similar to a diploma or a degree? Wow, I'm a ranter, but I could use lessons from that guy.

I agree Tom, that it's a bit of a joke that way as well. Don't underestimate the province being in bed with him to help with the money angle. There has been questions in the past about the dealing out of provincial grant money for artists, and their choice of studio. This could prove to be another questionable bit of business, but I hope not.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by personal accreditation, but take this from someone who has formal training in the field. What I know has always meant more to all my clients than where I went to school. The knowledge and experience from my schooling has got me in the door some times, but kept me in the door every time.

Real world experience helps connect the dots, but I can tell you that I wouldn't have gotten as far and as fast career wise without my education.

all joking aside,

this lack of institutional accreditation could prove to weed out many of prospect students... mainly the ones that have no money coming from their parents... which could also be counteractive to weeding out the best young man or woman for the job of learning.
