Trying to impress with big words?

Postby Malcolm Boyce » Mon Mar 20, 2006 12:42 am

So I was directed to a web site for a mastering house by someone recommending them by experience and reputation. On their site, when describing the digital formats they work with, they specify 44.1 to 96K "word length". The actual quote is:
preferred source material ; 24 bit data files (wav or aif, 44.1 to 96 word length)

This is, in fact, incorrect.

I think this is a case of someone using terminology that they don't entirely understand, in an attempt to jazz up the lingo, and make the spec sound impressive to musican types, and digital newbies.

Just saying "sample rate" which everyone would understand, they threw in "word length"... which a lot of folks don't hear as much. 24 bit, is actually the word length. 44.1 to 96K would be the sample rate of the files, not the word length.

Not knowing what word length means doesn't bother me. Trying to use terms that you don't understand to impress people, does.

By the by... This facility bills itself on it's website as:
grey market mastering is montreal, quebec, canada's premiere affordable cd and vinyl mastering facility, operated by harris newman.
So I guess them not knowing that word length means bit depth not sample rate, might be a point to bring up.

Check it out...

What do you all think of this type of hype?
