any good new albums that aren't loud?

Postby macrae11 » Thu Jul 12, 2007 3:17 pm

On the flip side of the loudness wars... I'm looking for any albums which still sound great and have dynamics. Doesn't really matter the genre, as i'll listen to anything with good tunes and tones.

Anyone got some some suggestions?

One I can think of off the top of my head is John Mayer's new album Continuum. While still hot, it is not severly crushed like everything else. maybe about 1999 levels.
Great album though. Pino and Steve Jordan have some thick grooves, John's playing is inspired, and the tones from everyone are sick.

You'll be able to hear the album being showcased between sets at the Canterbury tent during the Salty Jam.

I'm a huge fan of anything recorded/produced by Ethan Johns.

Ryan Adams
Ray LaMontagne
King of Leons
Rufus Wainwright
etc...

the new Matt Mays 'When the Angels Make Contact' is quite stellar as well...

The latest dixie chicks album is good (and I'm not really a fan, but I'm starting to be), the new Tori Amos album isn't bad, John Mayer album is great, that is off the top of my head.

It might not be your thing Andrew but the new Iron Maiden is quite surprisingly mild.

Good call Marc. Ethan Johns is terrific and I will buy an album by an unknown artist if he produced it. He even made Kings Of Leon sound great.

If you can get Marc to come back on here to reply to you, I'll buy you a case of beer. But for now I'm not worried about buying you a case of beer. That being said I'll gladly share a case with you just for being a good buddy. But all beer aside you're replying a person that left the residence a while back. Though in all fairness we never changed the locks...

I knew that actually but I miss him and like him tons so I replied to him. Plus, he's 100% right and Ethan Johns is amazing.

Continuim is not his newest album, check out heart break warfare, its a pretty good album. I thought of it when you and matt were talking about bass tones yesterday and the tone matt was talking about is pretty much throughout the album.

Yeah but at the time this thread was created, Continuum was his latest studio release. I have been meaning to pick up that album for a while though. Did Pino play on it as well?

he sure did, it was produced by john and steve. I don't like it as much as continuim, its much more poppy and there are nothing that you probably wouldn't here on the radio. Unlike continuim that has tunes like Belief and Vultures.

Yeah, this thread is almost 3 years old to the day.

It's kinda hilarious to hear people commenting on levels by their "year" of reference. I've read several threads on different boards lately where they've said things like "early '90s mastering" or "around 2000 levels"... It's so funny to me.

I've learned to ignore my differences with Clinton. There are too many of them, and we get along better when we don't talk about artists we like/dislike.

We've never not gotten along because we don't take each others personal tastes too seriously. That and you're a pretty attractive guy.

John Mayer is in my top 3, he's absolutely awesome. Besides blues I tell everyone that my favorite music is good pop music. And he falls under this category

I like good pop music too but I'd have to disagree that John Mayer falls under that category. If you like quality pop music, try checking out The Pernice Brothers or some of the new stuff by Paul Westerberg.

His music that HE writes is so well thought out. Not to many people have the talent to come up with the arrangements he does, and he is an amazing guitar player too.

Keesha (or Ke$ha or whatever) co-wrote all her stuff but that does not make it something even resembling good (" boys trying to touch my junk" etc).

Sorry about that. I had a few too many glasses of wine.

Oh, and I find it hard to believe that you are putting Ke$ha and John Mayer into the same argument. You really feel that strongly about him?

nope, but using the arguement that writing your own music makes it good is weak. Hence my example. The Doobie Brothers wrote their own material too.
