"Best" is a relative term. We each use different program for a variety of different reasons.

I use Cubase 4 because it suits my needs as a musician/composer. I need something that is very MIDI involved, but I found Logic too complicated. This platform is what I found best in terms of my needs. It's more a composer's tool but works great as a general recording tool.

MacRae is using Protools and I'll be having to learn that platform know that we have purchased it for Fluid Audio Group. No so great on the MIDI side of things but is wicked for audio editing and processing. If you are looking at just being a recordist that may be a good platform since it's the industry standard.

I think Malcolm uses Sonar, and frankly I don't know much about that platform at all. A few of the people here use Sonor, they could fill you in...

Also there's this thread:

Also This thread should probably be moved to the Recording Forum....

Done...

I currently use Sonar for Recording, and for "editing" I use Sound Forge.

Hey no problem man, most of your questions will probably fall in this forum.

If you want to get a head start at what you'll be learning in school, probably Pro Tools would be your best bet, as most schools will be teaching that as their main program.

If you want to get into music creation the options are endless, and most can be used in conjunction with one another in some way. There's a decent list in the other thread that Matt pointed you to.

Locally, your best bet for selection would be Musicstop. Any reasonably decent music store will have some of these brands to choose from.

I'll assume that your price range is somewhere between 10 and 15 thousand dollars in which case I would reccomend getting a PT HD rig.

By the way are you still in high school?

Are you related to Ian Shonoman?

What kinds of things are you looking at using the software for? What platform do you prefer to use? Windoze? Mac?

If you're just interested in learning how to tweak around, there are tons of demo, and "lite" versions of stuff for you to try without spending any money. Pretty much every piece of hardware I've bought for "computer based recording" has come bundled with some kind of "free" audio software.

Which always brings me back to how I could build an insane Sonar/MOTU rig, and still have five thousand dollars left for what it would cost for a comparable ProTools rig.

... But that's another thread altogether.

You still have not told ANYONE what your budget is.
I swear I get asked on a DAILY basis from clients, friends and strangers alike, " Hey Al, what is the best mic (amp, compressor, eq, preamp etc.) to get?".
Answer, Elam 250 (Crown Macrotech 10000, Fairchild 670, GML 9500, Neve 1073 etc.)
Awesome Al, how much is that mic? Well if you can find one in good shape upwards of $20,000 dude.
What!!!!!!!! I ain't got that kinda dough!
Well how much do you have to spend?
I dunno I was thinking around $250.
Well in that case..................................................

I hear what you're saying, but what I've noticed is that even when folks say within a certain budget, most ignore that part and start listing stuff off like a bunch of schmucks...

Yeah, that and a TLM103

It happens over and over, all the time.

I know our young friend ruler is probably looking for something in the low end of things cost wise, as it is obvious that he hasn't much experience with this stuff yet.

Now you be nice to the young newbies Al...

Well if you looked around and shopped smart, you probably could find those two mics used for that amount.

As a special deal, for everyone who reads this thread, I'll now be offering up free downloads of all Scott's tunes once I'm done mixing them... :-P

Maybe I'll even post stems so you can mix them yourself... ;-)

I find this helpful if you're using Internet Explorer:
http://www.iespell.com/download.php
But yes, read over your posts before you click on submit. You will come off looking and sounding a little more professional and maybe gain a little respect.
Many people on this forum are professional people who are well respected in their field and if the advice they post here were typed out as if 'text messaging' a buddy, it would get very annoying and hard to take seriously.
Spelling and grammar might not seem like a very important (or relevant) thing, but I assure you, old folks (such as myself) appreciate it.
