Windows/Mac Tweaks for Recordists

Postby Malcolm Boyce » Tue Oct 07, 2008 10:34 pm

Found this site recently. Lots of stuff I already knew, but several I didn't. I actually stabilized a few issues with a few of these tweaks:

How many of you have heavily modified Windows installs for audio?

I was trying to help Nick out tonight with his XP computer but that link is dead now. Is there a new site that anyone would recommend for Win XP tweaks?

www.soundonsound.com.

search the forums, and there is a sticky on the pc forum. its a little bit hard to navigate at first, but, once you're in, and familiar....it becomes a resource that you love...

i think anyways. :)

edited for: actually, i just checked the pc forum, and they moved the sticky. but, there is a link somewhere on there for optimizing windows for recording.

Here's some stuff. Like always, sometimes they do, and sometimes they don't.

Strangely enough... that site seems to be back up.

www.blackviper.com

I really tweaked my system using the website recommendations. Suggests tweaks for all windows os. Great for me, l'm using a consumer grade version of Vista. I was able to turn off many RAM-hog processes and services.

My system is running pretty good right now. Except for a high frequency problem I'm desperately trying to figure out.

Ok, so maybe this is a strange post here, but it is semi-relevant. Lol. I purchased a used Mac from school at a fairly decent price. So, I'm wondering, are there any "tweaks" I can do to an older model I-Mac? From what I understand there's not much, but hey, maybe someone knows something interesting about the subject. Thanks!

Hey... Look at Tom bumping the old threads. :-D

Re-titled this one in hopes that it makes more sense...

Here's the most up to date list of to dos from Avid, and also the 10.5 version.

Here's another link that is a bit out of date, but it's still mostly relevant, and might have something about older rigs, but it's mostly based on the OS, of which you should still be able to run a fairly recent version. I think those computers have 10.5 on them, but can go up to 10.6

I don't bother getting into anything but the basics of these unless I'm having trouble with something. When starting up a new rig I typically just adjust the energy saver preferences, turn off spotlight, adjust a few key commands and I'm off to the races.
