How do you keep track of your work while working on projects?
In the days of analog tape, meticulous notes were kept regarding tracks, instrumentation, etc. Now, in the world of DAWs, people have gotten lazy, because it's possible to work on projects without these notes... that is, until it leaves to go to another facility/producer.
This has gotten to be so prevalent that the AES has come up with recommendations for notation of sessions in DAWs to try and standardize, which is of course difficult.
I keep fairly detailed paperwork on sessions that start at my facility, and start paperwork on some sessions that come to me for O/Ds. Tracks that come to me to be mixed do not have notes... period. Track sheets that have left me and come back with additional tracks have not been kept up to date.
So, when working in DAWs, who keeps track sheets?
I think part of what is great about digital, is that tracks recorded on small digital setups by artists, can come to facilities like Middle, or Weatherstation to be finished. I would like to see more of this take place, and part of this process is for people to learn to keep paperwork on their recordings.
