Short Film - Afghan

Postby Mathieu Benoit » Sun Jun 28, 2009 4:48 am

A little over a year ago I was asked to help out with music for a short film by a young film maker from Halifax. Budgets and time frames were tight but I took a look at the film and really wanted to do something to help out. So I sat down for an afternoon with Tony Noddin and we came up with some music for it. Since then the film has been receiving a lot of critical acclaim. It is now one of three finalists in the 2009 CBC Short Film Faceoff. Voting closes at 6pm Monday.

Here's a Facebook group with the details.

You can watch Afghan here on the CBC website. It's only 12 minutes long. If you like it, please don't hesitate to vote!

Thanks for the support!

I agree. The music is utterly appropriate.

That's an outstanding film Matt! Great job on the music! My wife and I both thought the music was very fitting.

Hey Matt

I just got back from vacation and saw the film on short film shootout or whatever on CBC. I couldn't watch it in PEI because the internet at my parents house is quite sketchy.

I thought it was awesome. Very much dug the music too. Was there a full orchestration version of it ever done? I thought it would have been nice to build up to something, even if it was just the closing credits, although I realize short films often don't have a whole lot in the way of closing credits. Anyways nice job. I've been meaning to see if one of our clients could afford some music on spec for you to do, but no one ever seems to have the budget.

It's too bad Glamor Guts won. It was a cute little film, but I thought it was clearly the weakest entry of the three.

Thanks Andrew!

Actually it's funny you say that. The music for the film was done in a rush. We just jammed along while watching the film. The last thing I said to Tony before we packed up: "I'm gonna finish this someday. This could really be something neat if it gets fleshed out."

Over a year later I finally started doing something with it. It's taking quite a departure. You'll hear soon enough, because you'll have to sign off on it. ;-)

Sounds good. Any particular uses in mind for the new version?

Indeed. But it'll require your producing abilities before it's done. We'll talk. There's been a lot of developments since you went on vacation.

Just picture that musical idea converted to "power pop", and then you'll have an idea where I'm going with it.
