..is playing at Harbour Station Saturday and I really think I want to go. Is that wrong? Also the floor plan on the website suggest the the stage will be facing toward the west. Is that right?

Nothing wrong at all with that Matt, and don't let anyone tell you any different. Blue Rodeo is practically a Canadian institution, and Jim Cuddy is a great vocalist. I especially love his stuff with Kathleen Edwards.

Jim Cuddy rocks my socks.

Agreed! Does someone know about the orientation of the stage though, I'm just curious.

Since the addition of the "Private Boxes" in the west end of the building, it has become accepted practice to "face" the stage that way, much to the detriment of the sound quality and regular folk seating at said shows.

Ah... I had no idea. Interesting! So you personally don't like it that way and that is the general consensus? Does Warren have any input on this?I've never thought about it, it just seemed strange I guess.

West facing shows

Yes, you are correct Malcolm, for smaller capacity shows (as determined by the promoters) we encourage the shows to set up east facing west. As part of the $30,000 cost the leasors of the suites are entitled to tickets for all events. Unfortunately it's really hard to convince the people spending the money that a plastic seat in the lower bowl without catering and a beer fridge close by are the equivalent to the suites for something like Blue Rodeo. We would have over 200 prime tickets that would have to be taken off the available seating to cover this before it even went on sale.
Politics of Dancing 101 I guess...

As for the sound quality, I've seen some incredible and equally terrible jobs done in that configuration and like any other gig it comes down to mixing for the room or mixing because it's day #57 on the North American tour...

Case in point, Dolly Parton's FOH guy hung a Line Array system from the bottom of the beams to 4' from the floor at a distance of about 140' to the back wall and drove it right into the ditch... Meanwhile, Jonny Reid's guy came in, looked at the room, hung half his stuff and spent an extra 30 minutes to tweak the DSP and it was great!

I've never been to a Blue Rodeo show that I've been disappointed in including the last time these guys were thru here and played in the this set up. Get a seat about 5 rows up at the back of the lower bowl and enjoy.

Sounds good! I'm going to buy my tickets tomorrow! Thanks Warren!

Not saying you can't do it, because you can, but if it were a decision made by a FOH person as to which end they took, I bet it would be unanimous as to which end they'd prefer to face.

Just sayin'...

Hands down... no question at all Malcolm. Unfortunately it's in the hands of the bean counters MOST of the time... the rest of the time they call it Cirque....
LOL

I found it on the floor plan. I think these are the kind of seats that you suggested I get Warren, is that correct?

If my memory serves me correctly, you'll be about 20' back and to the right from the mix position and about the same height as the FOH guy's ears...
I'd say it's pretty good... I'll come visit Saturday night....

The show was great! I really dug the opening act too, The Dustin Bentall Outfit. The sound was... alright. Blue Rodeo's drummer is pretty sick on a technical level, I mean I haven't seen that kind of ability in a while. The fiddle player was crazy, I absolutely thought that her solo in 5 Days stole the show. Anyways, had a lot of fun!

I went to Blue Olive afterward to catch Ruby Jean. That was really good too, Goz was on sound and he was doing a really great job. Overall, I had a great night out, that involved a lot of great music.

I remember seeing Glenn Milchem play with several folks before becoming a member of Blue Rodeo and always was impressed. He seemed such a perfect fit when he joined that band.
