New local albums being released?

One of the things that is bad about independant recordings is that the lack of "big promotion" makes it difficult to hear about anything cool going on. I find unless you are already in the loop of a given artist, you never get notice of anything new coming out...

Anyone aware of any cool new releases from local artists, out or coming out in the near future, worth checking out?

One that I'm aware of, because I recently mixed it, is local Folk/Rock singer/songwriter Glen Creamer with his debut album. I don't know if he has a date, but it will be soon I'm sure. The album mixes influences from Springsteen, Mellencamp, Knopfler, and others, and features several local musicians including Steve Walsh, Sean Roach, Kevin Shephard, Scott DeVarenne and more.

Cool....
Far from my preferred listening material, but I'd still buy it to support a local artist.
Keep us posted....

I can't think of anything coming out locally in the near future.

The new "Kelly Jay Band" album is expected to be finished by April.

I've got this little album project I've been working on for a while now. It's a group of 4 teenage guys from St. Stephen who call themselves 'Sedition'. Their influences are groups like 'Slayer', 'Pantera', 'Metallica', etc.
They finished recording last fall and I've been working on the mix a little bit at a time whenever I can get to it. I'm just getting to the mastering process now and should have a couple of the tunes ready to post for some serious critiquing shortly.
I'm not really that a big a fan of metal (sorry OG), but that being said, these kids have really got their shit together. Definately worth a listen!

Gentle dyin' christ, dude!!
I started to listen with the cans, but HAD to throw it up on the nearfields!!

There is a lot of maturity in the music. I'm diggin' the production, the arrangement, the whole package.
Critique?
Vox that aren't cookie monster parts sound a bit shakey and "held back". Given the age of these guys, I'm sure it will improve.

Nice fuckin' job! Can't wait for more.

It is now MANDATORY that you post this at the TOMB and robhalford.com.
Get to it!! 8-)

There wasn't a lot I could do about that. Scotty is only about 4'10 - 90lbs. he's still got a kid's voice, but yeah, the growly vox he aced.
I tried using AutoTune, a bunch of doubling techniques, nothing I tried could fatten up the sound of his voice any without ruining it.
What I ended up doing was just compressing it up to the front of the mix and added a little verb to it.
If you can think of some other trick I could try, I'm all ears dude.
Everything is still loaded in the can and nothing is etched in stone yet.

...and thanks for the nice comments.

I'm not sure I could suggest anything that you wouldn't have already tried, but I'll give it some thought.

u1176 or Malcolm may have some suggestions....

Sweet sufferin' arse pickles dude you have no idea how refreshing it is to hear 17 year olds writing what I was listening to when I was 17. I hear all the good old shit, DRI, DBC, Death Angel.................

Wicked!!!

As for your question I think that your aproach of comp'ing the weak clean vocals was correct, it probably made a substantial difference, having said that do you have access to a Disstressor?
This is one of the three ultimate 'punch through a thick mix' metal guitar/vocal comps. In this situation nothing would work better in my opinion.

Thanks for your reply, U1176.
I don't have access to a Distressor (nor have I ever heard of one up until now). But I did google a look see and did a little reading:
http://www.empiricallabs.com/distdes.html
$1300.00 US. A little outside the budget right now for the home studio.
From what I've read so far it seems as this unit adds a little bit of 'vintage warmth' to the sound.
I did try the Antares VST plug-in (that emulates a tube sound) and ran a bunch of different settings but I wasn't too happy with the results I got so I abandoned that idea.

The lead guitar player was using a little rig built by OG. I set it out on my back deck facing the ocean and stuck an SM57 in front of it. Also I recorded Scotty's vocals out on the deck facing the ocean. Seemed to get a lot better results than inside. I got some peculiar looks from the (religious) neighbours though as he was screaming at the ocean.

Well, if anything deserves to be screamed at.... ;-)

Any time, OG.
I keep the char-b-cue fueled up year round.

This is my little work station. Notice the Tannoy Active Reveal near field monitors? Nothing but good things to say about them. Speaker stands are made from 3" ABS plumbing pipe with a toilet flange screwed to a double thick 3/4'plywood top and base. Got that idea out of a recording magazine (cheap, but effective).

Sweet. Nice organized little space with everything within reach.
Got the 3" ABS filled with sand or anything?
