Local for the sake of local...

Postby Malcolm Boyce » Sun Aug 20, 2006 7:41 pm

Those who know me well know my feelings about supporting local music and such because of it's origin instead of it's quality and merit. It's not people supporting local artists that I have the problem with, it's the expectation of support because of being "local" that I have difficulty with.

Something came to mind today as I was listening to Grand Theft Bus in my car. I can count on one hand the number of "local" artists that I would be caught listening to for enjoyment. To me, this is the ultimate indicator of whether you genuinely like an artists effort. It's the difference between hanging a piece of art you purchased in your home, or sticking it in the back of a closet.

So those of you who "support" local music out there. What have you listened to lately from a "local" artist? I'm not talking about something you just got and tried out... I'm talking about pulled out from your collection because you really wanted to hear it.

Salvation Front and Mindzeye. I like both of them, probably because they don't sound local.

I have an advance copy of Curtis Basques' "Hold The Moment", and that is is my current playlist as well.

I always say that if you can tell something is "local" just by listening... something's wrong.

i have to agree. if i go to a local band's show, it's either because i like them,
or to see if i like them. i never go just because they're local. if that were the
case, i may as well love their band just because they're local. in fact, i may
as well just not like music at all for the way it sounds, or makes me feel, etc.

recently, i've pulled these locals out because i love thier music:

the stabby dancers
mr distant (i only have two songs by him, but i really like those songs)
broken boy (t.leche, jetprojectlabs)
ess project
happy medium (they may not be a band anymore, but i still love the cd)
clinton charleton
butterfly effect
So, we need air to live, but we can't hold it in?... We're screwed.
