One Mic Recordings

Postby clinton » Wed Nov 30, 2011 1:04 pm

Last night I recorded a little string band set up (which we affectionately dubbed "The Tuesday Night Minstrels") with one microphone. We used a Rhode NT-3 (not the ideal mic for this application but what we had on-hand) and placed ourselves wherever it made most sense to get a decent mix. The band consisted of two acoustic guitars, an acoustic lap steel, violin, vocal, harmony vocal, some back-up vocals, and some brushes on a suitcase.

The recording turned out decent and I think sounds as fun as it was to perform. This was easily the most fun I ever had recording and the spirit of the whole thing really captured what making music is about to me. The idea was more of the affect than the song itself.

Anyway, give it a listen if you'd like and let me know about your experiences using this technique.

Sounds good.

I love that kind of stuff. I could record forever with a pair of 87's and a good room.

Thanks Andrew. I plan to do more songs recorded like this. It just makes sense to me.

Sounds like someone should get an omni for Christmas...

I think a multi pattern LDC would be in order like the NT2A. MS stereo really is amazing for this stuff. All the best parts of mono with the best parts of stereo. And you've still got a null to hide things in.

The NT2A is fab, and a great value for what it is.

Yeah it was a big improvement over the NT2. It's still got the same high mid bump as all Rodes, but it's quite a bit smoother than the NT1A or NTK. It's probably the most versatile and usable mic in the line next to the Classic.

Both of my bluegrass style "one" mic recording were both done with an MS pair, maybe Matt can find them and post them.
Keep in mind that the mics do not have to be matched.
