I have not seen this.

I must see it.

What are the details of it's existence?

I think I'll be getting a copy of that soon. Very entertaining.

I think we have taken things to a whole new level of pre-fab. Things have always been about packaging and look, but now with the technology, you get nothing real at all.

At least with stuff from the 50s-70s that was a singer with a deal, you heard that singer, usually with some great studio musicians, and it had some musical value. They did sing live. Now, it's computer generated music, with a computer generated voice. I'm not saying it's not music, I'm saying it's easy, and not very interesting to those musically inclined.

Talent will win long term in my opinion.

I sure hope so...

hypothetically though, If I was hired on a big budget album for a big name label... as the engineer/pro tools editor, and found myself to be the most talented individual of the whole crew... that would be pretty sad and not to mention boring... and I'm sure this scenario happens a lot these days.

Must say that I think that the music will never die...

But finding music that I like and music were I can appreciate the work that went into it will be much harder to find.

It`s the small thing`s like analog humm/hiss and singer`s that arent perfect, Hearing a guitarpick hit the string, hearing the artist breath
that makes the recording human. This style of music gives me hope

Mick Jagger in his prime wouldn't get a callback on American Idol. That's my beef with the way things are going right now, but every time I hear Nickelback, I get a craving for a big mac. mmmmmm....

yep,

For a while now,
Chris Fudge and I had talked about bringing this documentary to SJ... and the filmmakers agreed to send us a copy for a free screening.

thanx for all who came out to this... we had a great crowd with a great response.

Fudge and I are hoping to set this up again, soon.... next screening will most likely be uptown this time.

Just got my PC back up and running, and finally I have sound!! Been without sound for like 2 years now...I know I know total neglect.......Anyways, this is the first time I've been able to see this on You Tube and the "Before the Music Dies" website. It is astounding!!! I knew that sound could be manipulated, but I had no idea how incredibly un-real it truly can be on the mass commercial level. One downloadable sound application can make someone who is vocally sensless, into a musical sounding star! I mean I knew it exsited, but seeing the direct application is astounding. It makes me want to rethink the way I write my own music. Be an artist, or be a salesman, is there a fine line? Yeeeeeeesh. PLease post if there will be another screening, definetly interested.

I've been preaching this sermon for years.

Why do you think it's referred to as the "Music Business? Money first, medium 2nd....or even further down the list of priorities.

It's rather funny...when I travelled to Mexico years ago, I found that Mexicans all had common, traditional songs that they all knew, and would sing together. I met Brazilians, Portugese....same thing. But here in North America, we have successfully been estranged from the music. Music is not seen as something you share, it is a commodity that you purchase.

Very sad.

It's true Thom,
when you get outside the realm of American culture, music becomes a much different experience.

Though, if you were to mix numerous Acadian acts, over and over and over again, like I've done over the years... you'd see that certain 'anthem like' folk songs do not die that easily... although, the most successful Acadian music phenomenon of the last ten years or so, has been Cayouche, a true backwoods story teller that only knows 3 chords... Cayouche is the farthest thing from commercial and fake... he's not exactly my cup of tea, but I'm glad to see that his fans have supported his success by knowing that he's the real deal.

I like that guy already, just based on his history from the link you gave me. That is one fella keepin' it real. I'll probably end up being some 70 year old grumpy blues guy, playin to my grand kids and buggin my neighbors from too much commotion coming from my front porch....and I'm alright with that. 8-)

To recommend a good book on the subject of "American music industry" and how it came to this... I recommend the Book "HIT MEN" by author Frederic Dannen. A historical documentation of the evolution of the biz. Fascinating... My favorite part is the delay between the invention of the CD by Philips and it's injection into the industry, I think roughly 13 years or so...lol Reminds me of the electric car... although then again it doesn't, the electric car will never be fully injected in the industry...lol
