Glad they renamed it. It never really was much of a "Jazz & Blues" festival. Now it can become a great music festival for the city each year.

I really think this will open it up to a whole bunch of people who wouldn't attend a "Jazz & Blues" festival.

Colin James will be killer!

It'll be interesting to see how it fairs. I still think the key to any successful event is promotion, and this thing should be in our faces all day in the weeks leading up the event. This was always a major problem with the other events.

I agree that promotion is key. I also say don't underestimate the importance of programming.

I have seen far too many events go south because of programming that wasn't thought through to the end. These "festivals" need to have programming that appeal to those attending... period. People need to stop trying to cram acts into lineups that just don't fit.

Wide Mouth Mason at Festival By the Sea... Disaster!
Fred Eaglesmith at Saint John Jazz and Blues... Huh?
Don't even get me started about Trooper and April Wine...

I'm all for trying to expand people's musical horizons, but there's a time and a place for everything. I remember talking to folks who would come from out of town, with a pass for the whole "Jazz & Blues" festival, who were wondering why there wasn't more Jazz... or Blues...

So true. I believe Jimmy Rankin was headlining the former SJJ&B Fest the year that Fred Eaglesmith was performing... Fantastic artists to be sure, but a real head scratcher for the ardent Jazz & Blues fan...
Someone commented to me the other day that they found it ironic that there is more Jazz & Blues in the festival now than there was when it was a "Jazz & Blues" festival.
I had to chuckle.

* Thanks for taking the time to set up a forum such as this!

this has been a very common question. it often ran alonside other questions,
like "do they even have any jazz or blues bands in this thing?", "is this
what saint john thinks jazz and blues are?....", and "man, did you see
those tits?!?".

i also hope that the name "salty jam" doesn't make think that this
is an all jam band thing. it isn't. i've already heard people asking if
that's what it was.

I honestly never even made that connection. I could see where people with a phobia of Jam Bands might be afraid because of the name...

I see a need for a resource that I think these forums can now provide.

Thank you all for participating, and helping this to grow into something useful.
