Cajon Drums

Postby clinton » Mon Jun 07, 2010 4:54 pm

Anyone know much about 'em? I am thinking of buying one but I am not familiar with much with affordable, decent quality makes. I am looking for a good resonant bass response and quick attack.

Suggestions?

Never used one, but would love to go looking at some with you. We should go on a date to Long & McQuade. I need to look for yet another acoustic anyways, and the budget is bigger this time.

Do they have Cajon drums there?

Don't hijack Clinton's thread.

Actually it's not for me, it's for a friend.

I would say of all the cajons I have heard, none of the "new" ones have had as much character as older well worn ones. This is not a romantic observation about the "good old days", but a fact of having worked with some of the finest percussionists with some very old and well used cajons from who knows where. Some of these players have brought in many one of a kind drums that sound like nothing I've ever heard before or since.

That being said, I really do enjoy the sound of the major brand ones that are common these days. LP and Meinl cajons both make regular appearances on stages around here and are enjoyable tone wise as well as very playable.... including for a non hand drummer as myself.

There are different styles of cajons even within a certain brand and I know if I were looking, I would try as many as I could get my hands on, but know that no matter what, I could find something interesting to pick up.

Good luck with the hunt, and let us know what you end up going with, and what you looked at and heard.

right on brother, I look forward to our mini-date. If they're selection sucks (ie - they have one) then I might run down to Beats and Bytes too. They're good for that sort of specialized percussion stuff.

You have me booked from 7pm to 8:30. Then I'm moving on to yet another double date. So for 90 minutes I'll go wherever you want.
