PC problem needs fixin'

Postby roachie » Mon Dec 13, 2010 7:36 pm

I don't know exactly how to describe what is happening other than my machine is being choppy... it freezes for a split second every 2 seconds... it just started happening today when I booted it up. Any idea what this could be?

My first suspicion is that something is running that is hogging resources. It could be something ugly. Did you look in the task manager to see if anything is looking like it's using up your processor?

Did you recently install or "update" anything?

That would be the first of several questions one might ask in this case.

It seems to be working now (xp pro by the way)... must've had something funky running in the back, cause the virus scan was clean... the first couple of reboots didn't help, but 3rd time was a charm.

I would still recommend giving it a thorough cleaning though in safe mode. Run a virus, malware, and spyware scan on everything. Sometime when you can tie it up for a couple hours. Make it part of a routine maintenance schedule. Your apps will thank you for it.

I use AVG Free, MalwareBytes, and SpyBot. They are free and work quite well if you use all 3 of them.

I've heard that Spyware Doctor is one of the best, but not sure if it's free. I know I used to have it on an old computer and it worked great, but it could have been pirated.

Spyware Doctor is around 40 bucks to purchase. If you are planing to buy software such as this, it would be wise to do a little research first. Some of the programs that you pay for are bloated with a lot of useless apps 'n shit that do nothing more than run in the background and hog your resources. Myself, I prefer to use apps that do only what is required of them.
