I may have something lying around. I'll check the basement. Does it have to work?

No, I don't think it does. He's trying to make a laser or something.

Like Sharks, with frickin' laser beams on their heads? You're like the best evil son ever!

No it doesn't have to mechanically or electronically work, just so long as the diode is not burned out!!

Yep if I can find something I'll bring it down this weekend. I can't promise that the diode won't be burnt out, but I would think that would be unlikely no? Has to be DVD though, CD won't work? Also has to be burner, not just player?

Correct on both counts, DVD and burner.
The best would be an HD DVD or Blue Ray burner, but that's a little much to ask for.

I'm sure you could find an HD DVD burner for cheap somewhere on the interwebs.

Anyone else worried about what Al is actually building?

It's too bad because I know I've turfed two in the last 6 months. I guess you really don't know what you might need some day...

Thanks to Andrew supplying me with a Sony Optiarc DVD burner out of his MacPro.
I finished my laser Friday night. It was powerful enough to cut electrical tape.

Unfortunately the "Benoit way" is to take this to the next level. I fully expect there to be upgrades to this design before too long. I wouldn't be surprised if he's cutting through steel by the end of summer.
