The whole thing feels (and sounds) like a high school talent show.
You can thank the lust for $$ (contestants / producers alike) for crap like this.

Talent - Yeah, I can't believe I actually made it this far this year!
Host - Well, we sorta scraped the cream off the top over the first couple of seasons, so.....you're what's left!
Talent - I'd like to thank jesus, and my mom and dad.....blah blah blah....

I have friends who've tried out for said program who are exponentially superior singers who don't make the cut, so obviously it's not a singing contest.

This is the music video industry. It hasn't been just about music for a long time.

Canadian Idol couldn't even get that part right. I recall some Max Headroom impersonator winning a couple of years back, and this years crop is none too photogenic...
