More digital cable fun...

So I have a Motorola set top box with my Rogers Digital Cable. Nothing fancy, not HD, but the standard box they give you when they set you up.

As you know, I had noticed before how poor quality the video portion of the deal was. One other thing I had noticed since using the digital box was how erratic volume levels were between shows and commercials, and even between different shows on the same channel. I don't have my cable hooked up to any listening rig other than my stereo TV typically so I never noticed something until I was checking something last night.

So here's the back of the box:

Now because I have a DVD player connected to my line ins of my TV, the cable or RF connection out of the set top box is my only option to connect to the TV. No big deal, except the audio from this connection is MONO ONLY!!! Sorry I thought this was 2008, not 1988!!!

From the user guide:
Standard TV Cabling
Use 75-ohm coaxial cables to connect your DCT700 to a TV. This is
the most common cable connection, and it provides all of the basic
features of the DCT700.
If you are connecting the coaxial TO TV/VCR connector on the DCT700
to the coaxial CABLE IN connector on the TV, you must tune your TV to
channel 3 or 4.
The illustrated connections will not provide stereo. Connect the
DCT700 using RCA baseband connectors to receive stereo (illustrated
later in this section).

You have to use the line cables to get stereo audio out of this box...

So I guess I'm buying a switcher...
