Vocalist Needed

Postby Malcolm Boyce » Tue Apr 14, 2009 1:35 pm

I'm trying to get a vocalist lined up to be the "singer" in a group of instructors for Imperial Theatre's "ROCK IT" camp. Dates will be July 27th through the 8th of August.

Someone with "Rock" sensibilities is a must. Someone with some musical education (private or college) is a must... not necessarily a "trained vocalist". Someone who is a fairly proficient musician (guitar/keyboard etc) would be a huge plus as well.

Duties for the days are to provide coaching for mostly teen aged band members in preparation for a final performance at Imperial Theatre. The group of instructors also play in "clinic" settings daily and prepare material, as well as jam on unstructured material. Instructors may "fill in" empty spaces in some groups for some musical numbers for the performances.

Someone with a broad base of musical/performance experience is a must.

Interested or know someone, please PM me, or e-mail malcolm@middleaudio.com

I may know of someone. How much does it pay?

It is a paying gig. That is the extent to which I can talk about it in an open forum.

You know, if I were paying for my child to go to a musical camp, rock or not, I'd certainly want trained professionals teaching my kid. Who's the instructors at this thing?

Most "trained" vocalists in this area would fall into the "Opera" category as opposed to the "Rock" category. We, in the past, did have a "trained" vocalist with no "Rock" chops and it didn't work out so well for everyone involved. In my post I specified that some musical education is a must. If I could find a "trained" vocalist who was a "Rock" singer in this town, who was interested in this sort of gig, they'd be in.

Very few people sign up to learn how to "sing" in this camp. We actually make everyone, including the drummers, do a vocal element of the program to help get people out of their shell and learn that it's not so hard to belt out some backing vocals.

So far for this year instructors include:

Myself...
Dean Roberts...
Chuck Teed...

This is a camp to get kids out of practicing alone in their basement, and learning how to play in a band, which is what they all ultimately want to be able to do. We teach mostly stuff you don't learn in private music lessons... Stuff you don't experience until you are thrown into a band setting.

I have been looking for a proper vocalist for this group of instructors for weeks, and am having zero luck finding anyone who fits the bill... and is available for two weeks in the middle of summer.

that makes sense. Sounds like a decent line up too. That red haired kid sure can play bass. Decent kisser too.

*Update*

We have secured the services of Jon Epworth for this summer's camp. After listening to some of his tunes online, I'm pretty psyched about playing with him, and the other guys for the two weeks we'll be together for.

That's excellent. Jon is a fantastic singer & songwriter, a veteran performer and a really enthusiastic, kind person. Sounds like these kids have a great bunch of instructors!

And I friggin' hope he plays some shows around here if he's in the area!

Incidentally, Jon is a great guitar player and a truly fantastic drummer to boot.

Hear that Malcolm? You and Dean can give him your students and spend the day at the zoo to engage Llama's in spit wars (I'd bring goggles).

Is Glenn still running that show?

No. Hasn't been since the year you did it...

No connection.

I like him and all. He's a real peach. But the year I was there would have been a gigantic clusterfuck without Dean and Franco. Anyways, it was an easy pay, and I liked the kids. I had a group of 7 or 8 I think.

Thanks Adam. That is what I have heard. I don't recall meeting Jon before, but it's possible I'll make a connection when I see him.

He'll have plenty of free time around the actual camp while he's here.

As a bit of a plug, Jon will be part of the performance, Aug 8th at Imperial, featuring the kids from the camp. Great fun, and gives the little knuckleheads a crowd to play to. Pass it on.

I don't have a link to the show info, but I'll post it when I do.

I just heard this news and WOW, great for the camp. Jon is an unreal performer and honestly one of the best vocalists I've ever seen live.

And to add on to what Adam said, what a tastey drummer!!
