wrong impedence setting on my Hiwatt

Postby weatherstation audio » Wed Aug 30, 2006 3:01 pm

So, I can change the impedence setting on the back of my 68' Hiwatt head... usually it's set to the 16 ohms for the stock Hiwatt cabinet... although, the other week I played a gig with a different cab in the 8 ohms setting and forget to set it back when I returned it home... I was jammin' with my usual Hiwatt cab set-up in the 8 ohms setting 'yikes' ! Although, the tone from the amp head, for some reason 'was to die for'... what to do ?

Carry on, as if nothing really matters...
Tube amps are extremely forgiving. Impedance mismatches really are not a great concern, and your mismatch is the least of the least. You are set at 8 ohms, but presenting a 16 ohm load. No sweat...your amp will take it, and love it.
If the head was set up for 16 ohms, and you were presenting an 8 ohm load...meh...I would occasionally check the output transformer temperature.
I would try to stay away from a 16:4 match, but still it would depend on how hard you were pushing the head.

If your 8:16 match sounds good....do it.

Yeah, that's what I had been sayin' to myself... "the amp loves it !"

but I still needed to question it though, being that's it's vintage tube amp and all...

That's one of the things I love about tubes....you can abuse the hell outta them, and they come back for more.
