Inside...vintage caps and 2 wire mains. I've already cleaned a spot to locate a solid ground point.

All new caps installed, along with a modern 3 wire plug. Crammed in some new tubes and I was done.

LAB Series amp. Gibson (aka Norlin Corp at this particular juncture) re-enters the amp market with these solid-state gems.
Some peeps like 'em. To me, they lack any distinctive character.

^ I never noticed it until I posted this pic, but the Gibson Skylark is in the background on the right.
A real Gibson amp with tubes vs. a pseudo Gibson solid state amp. It's surprising that there wasn't the equivelent of a matter/antimatter explosion.

Anywhoooo....
I digress....

The problem with all the LAB Series amps I have worked on is that the output transistor sockets are being asked to support a circuit board.
Repeated heating/cooling cycles stress the solder connections and break them.

Ya gotta tear the mutha completely apart to get at them and repair them properly.

A bit of history...

Postby oddioguy » Wed Jul 26, 2006 8:24 pm

A gentleman by the name of Mike Battle invented the Echoplex, which he now markets under the name of Tubeplex. Mr. Battle is, I believe, in his 90's.
Based on the build quality of this "refurbished" unit, it's time to pass the torch...

This thing is loaded with previously used components, and many connections were never made, or at the least never soldered.
