It would be interesting to hear a 'before & after' comparison.
Do you have another unmodified ART - Tube MP preamp for a
'shoot-out' type of comparison?

Yes, which is why I'd record a pair of 4050s to the same source, one will be the control the other will be the mod.

thought so.... just didn't want to assume..

You should actually just use a single mic and then split the signal before the preamp. Just make sure that you're not sending phantom twice. Al can show you.

This way you eliminate any variables from microphone placement. Also you could use the 4051, which is a bit quicker than the 4050s and would (hopefully) show off the improvement in transient response of the modified preamp.

Also... can you record just the open mic with no signal and boost the noise floor way up just to hear the "hideously noisy to Is it on" difference?

I never thought of that... I wanted to use the 4051 initially but I wanted to record the same performance at the same time. I never considered splitting the signal. This is a much better idea.

Yeah I'll do that for ya too. Not a problem.

Hideous is the right word though. The stock preamp was absolutely unusable by most standards. I can't say that the mod is a "great" sounding preamp, haven't really tried it out yet. I can say though that it's pretty clean now. Like Alain said... "Is it on?" kind of clean.

You had two plans, if memory serves. One of which included a pair of 4050s (I'm now assuming because we didn't have an acoustic?). That was the only plan that I remember discussing. The other one involved a 4051 and an acoustic, but you never really communicated the plan for that one, so it never accured to me that it would have been the "usual" way to go about it.

I don't really A/B enough pres to use the word "usually". Maybe someday.

love, matt

Maybe, I don't even know what that is. You're the moderator. You can split this up into two additional threads, one can be about the preamp modification, and then we can make a poll in the coffee shop to see how many of us ride dirtbikes in our studios... :-P
