Okay, I'm back.

Got my head on straight again, and I've returned to service work although in a slightly different capacity.
I am now working out of Fluid Audio's facilities exclusively (that's U1176 for the uninitiated).
I'll be posting interesting repairs again, and will be concentrating on tube gear (duh...)

If you need yer shit fixed, you know who to contact!

Great!
I've been saving up a shit load of broken gear just waiting for you to get back into service work...
Somehow I knew your absence from the trade would only be temporary.

Well, not only is the fact that I'll be working out of the studio helpfull in keeping my house free of the piles of gear that inevitably accumulate, but the missus has tendered her notice at work. Retirement is official, so I'mm back to working 3 jobs.

Well I had my hands in a Fender amp last night. This unit has seen abuse, misuse, and neglect.
Most of the major issuses have been resolved, and the amp now passes signal....to a degree.
Biggest issue now is getting the channel switching back, and here we run into a problem.
There is an LM339 voltage comparator that should be seeing 30VDC as its supply, but it is getting hit with 53VDC. No biggie, I'm thinking. The 30VDC is derived from the 53VDC supply via a zener diode which is clearly marked on the schematic. Obviously the zener has opened up (along with a bunch of previously replaced 1N4148s) and I merely need to replace it.
So I look....and look....and look some more.
I'll be damned if I can find the zener ANYWHERE in this amp.
My immediate solution is to add one. The old one, if it indeed exists, is open and irrelevant. I'm going to slam a new one in and replace a couple of LED's that were blown open, and perhaps I'll be up and running.

Haven't done much repair-wise lately. Just don't feel like doing anything, really.
I think I'll look up the symptoms of depression on the 'net.

I think you'll probably find that's one of the symptoms...

Hey Thom, did you ever find that elusive diode in the "evil" twin?

I looked for over an hour that time, couldn't find it. Should we offer a reward for whoever finds it? Did you end up just adding one? When I'm done at the Flaming Bird in the new year, let me know if you need a free sidekick. I need to learn so much about that stuff...

It doesn't exist on that early version...it was an add-on to later models.
Couldn't hurt to add one though. Obviously a problem...

Ah, that's what it was. That was really frustrating, I'm glad there was a logical explaination. I do miss seeing you in the shop though. Although I'm not around much lately either. We should make a new year's resolution to go to the studio more...lol

Sub's picked up a lot of the slack there since you've been away, and Al's been working his boilermaker gig. His trouble shooting skils are growing exponentially.

That's good to hear. I wanted to do it, but my interest is at an all time ebb... :-(

What I need are (in no particular order):

- Sex
- Drugs
- Rock & roll

...a little alcohol thrown into the mix wouldn't hurt either.

A buddy needed a cheap amp...here's my solution...
Old G-K chassis, with my old 100W MOSFET Marshall clone shoe-horned in upside down.

That's neat. Is that GK as in Gallien Kruger? If so what does the bass driver sound like for guitar?

...as in Gallien Kruger...yup...
It was originally a Backline 100...so it's a guitar speaker. :)

Definitely designed as a guitar amp.
